1) Can you tell me about your experience as a veteran and how it has influenced your interest in gardening?
I grew up in a farm community and loved gardening at an early age. I also dreamed of traveling the world as a Navy. I joined the U.S. Navy and retired after serving our country for over 20 years.
2) What initially sparked your interest in gardening, and how has it evolved over time?
Growing different varieties of plants has always been my interest, especially after my military career. I always keep myself busy and productive, which makes me happy. I learn new techniques for growing, grafting, and propagating plants through gardening.
3) Have you found any similarities or connections between your military service and your gardening activities?
Achieving goals in the military and in gardening somehow has some similarities. In the military, I set goals for training and promotions. In gardening, I plan for the right planting time, time to fertilize, and harvest.
4) How did you find out about Feeding San Diego (FSD)? How often do you come in?
Looking for something to do for the community got me volunteering my time when I saw the advertisement for Feeding San Diego on TV. I visited the site and was inspired to join. I am happy to join the group of kind-hearted volunteers. I have been participating on an average of three Saturdays per month since January of 2023.
5) What’s been your favorite experience so far while volunteering at Feeding San Diego?
My favorite experience so far while volunteering at FSD is seeing people smiling and so thankful upon receiving their shares of goodies. It also makes me happy to work with a kindhearted group of volunteers.
6) Aside from gardening and volunteering, what other activities do you participate in?
Aside from gardening and volunteering, my wife and I love ballroom dancing, which makes us feel younger.
7) Can you share a memorable gardening project or experience that had a meaningful impact on you?
Harvesting and sharing my produce with friends gives me enormous joy. I am always happy to share how to propagate, graft, and pollinate to produce abundant fruits.
8) What advice would you give to other veterans who might be interested in pursuing gardening as a hobby or volunteer opportunity?
To my fellow veterans who might be interested in pursuing gardening and volunteering, open-mindedness and having lots of patience are must-haves. There are some challenges in gardening to grow healthy plants. Bad weather, insects, and bugs are destructive and soil conditions are also important.
Last Saturday, we had the pleasure of savoring another delectable apple rose tart made by Manual.
