Regina Gamboa is the founder and executive director of The First Peoples Choice Pantry. She created a dignified, and no-cost food pantry for the South Bay community. This initiative helps seniors without access to transportation, individuals with limited incomes, and anyone in need. The pantry is the same as a grocery store but operates without a cashier. Maggie’s Table offers free cooking classes to teach simple cuisine, food nutrition, and healthy eating.
The pantry opened in March this year to fight an increased food insecurity in the south region after COVID-19. Inside the store, one can find a variety of fresh and nutritious produce and other necessities including hygiene items, cleaning products, and pet food. Those merchandise cannot be purchased with EBT cards. Additionally, an alternative and international food section has been set up to accommodate dietary restrictions and cultural sensitivities.
This community-driven pantry impresses shoppers with aesthetic design and prioritizes cultural cuisines. It boosts the overall well-being of the community. It is located at 633 9th Street, Imperial Beach, CA 91932, and opens to the public on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. For appointments, please call (619) 770-6000.
