Swiss Chard

Updated: Aug 15

The Grab & Grow Gardens® Program of Healthy Day Partners has been distributing at the Produce Pantry site of Feeding San Diego since October of 2022. It contains a collection of vegetable and herb seedlings in an easy-to-carry bag. According to Mim Michelove, the CEO/President, "The Grab & Grow Gardens program embodies Healthy Day’s food sovereignty work – promoting ecologically conscious food production, distribution, and consumption for everyone no matter their zip code or income level."

In a recent distribution, the Grab & Grow Gardens Kit featured Swiss Chard, also known simply as Chard. This vegetable was named by the Swiss botanist Karl Heinrich Emil Koch. It is a straightforward process when growing from seeds. Swiss Chard grows well with plenty of sunlight, proper watering, and some fertilizer. In addition, it is not easy to get worm infestations. There is no need for pesticides. In mild climates, it can be cultivated year-round in full sun. It is suitable for both containers and grounds. Within two months, you can start harvesting the leaves for consumption. Use scissors to trim the leaves, and growth will continue, ensuring a continuous supply of this nutritious vegetable.

On the first and third Saturday mornings of each month, starting at 10 am, drop by the parking lot at 9477 Waples St. Pick up one bag of seedlings and start growing your vegetables.
